Japan attracts around 40 million foreign tourists per year, and an estimated 1.2 million of them are Muslim. Combined with the country’s growing resident Muslim population, demand for authentic halal-certified wagyu has exploded — yet less than 0.1% of all Japanese wagyu meets both halal and A5-grade standards.
Halal Shop Japan focuses exclusively on this rare overlap: A5-grade wagyu certified halal by NAHA, a Japanese halal certification body.
What halal certification actually requires
- Third-party certification: periodic audits and inspections by a recognised body. Our wagyu carries the NAHA certification.
- Halal-compliant feed and water: no pork-derived or alcohol-derived ingredients in the animal’s diet. Our wagyu is raised in Hokkaido on a grain diet of corn, wheat, and rice bran.
- Segregated processing and logistics: separation from non-halal products throughout storage and transport.
What does A5 mean?
A5 is the highest grade given by the Japan Meat Grading Association (JMGA): “A” denotes the highest yield, “5” denotes the highest marbling, colour, firmness, and fat quality. Roughly 10% of all wagyu reaches A5 — and of that, less than 1% is halal-certified.
